Where to live in Hawaii?

Jenny Pooh asked:

My husband and I are seriously looking to move to Hawaii. He is a biologist, so we would like to move somewhere where he can work in his field – either with aquatic animals, or land species, or plants. I have just graduated with my MBA, specializing in Finance, so I would like to live somewhere where I can utilize these skills. We are most interested in the beach-style of living, and do not yet have a family, but would be interested in starting one. Where would you recommend? Obviously as we are just starting out we cannot afford luxury living, so please keep this in mind when sending your suggestions.

Thanks in advance!
We are actually looking to buy a place, not rent. But would consider a rental for a few months.

With a Finance degree, you should be downtown in Honolulu. Sign up on the big Internet career boards and you’ll get some action there.

For him, he should contact UH Biology Department, UH Burns School of Medicine and talk to the local biotech companies – there are a lot of them. There are quite a few bio companies at the Gold Bond building, search on “677 Ala Moana, Honolulu”.
Also, try Adecco, they place tech and science people. Ask for Sandra or Beverly.
I would also search on “kakaako biology”.
    Good luck!

Were you looking to rent or buy? Do you have a specific island in mind? You can email me and I can give you more specifics if you want.

I would recommend the Island of Oahu. There is a lot more job options for the two of you there compared to the outer islands. Keep in mind that you do pay to live in paradise, everything is much more expensive, from milk to rent to just normal cost of living.

The NW side of Oahu, the Waianae coast, is developing and has lots of ocean and the last remains of semi affordable homes if you like the aquatic and beach life.

Kapolei is just past the Waianae coast with track style housing and a new but very busy town with new government offices and businesses there. The further in you go to Honolulu or Waikiki the more expensive the homes get, especially if you want to be on or near a beach. The North Shore is expensive too, but also a favorite spot for surf and lots of beach houses.
It really depends on what you plan to pay for a house, or pay for rent.
If and when you are ready to purchase a home there, a good mortgage place is New Horizons Financial located in Aiea. The guy’s name is Ted. Email me if you want the phone number. Good service and very good rates and turn around time. Foster Realty is good. Agent we used is Jayne. I can give your that number as well. I purchased a town home on the Leeward Coast.. It’s a bit of a trek to Honolulu, about 25 miles, but if you don’t have to do a morning and afternoon commute, it’s not bad. Lots of smaller towns along the way. Lots of shopping, and good places to eat. Great weather all year around. Expensive but worth it.
