What’s fun near Hilo Hawaii?

beachrinkpinky asked:

I’m going to Hilo this weekend for a wedding. I will have Sunday & Monday free and want to know if there’s anything worth visiting in that area. I’ve been to the big island before, but I mostly visited beaches on the Kona side.

as far as entertainment is concerned on the mauka (east) side, it all depends on your transportation. if you have a car, go to mauna kea, or volcanoes national park. if you have a bike, or really just want to stay in hilo, you could go to:
-hilo bay (keep in mind that the water there isn’t very good because of the break wall which was built to supposedly ‘stop’ another tsunami). they have kayaks there, and coconut island gives a decent view of the bay
    -rainbow falls
    -boiling pots
    -snorkeling at 3mile beach
-’downtown’ hilo has a lot of health food stores and hippie type things
    -puna weed

as far as directions are concerned, it’s extremely complicated to explain over the internet. while you’re there, go into any long’s drug store and buy the blue ‘a guide to the big island’ travel book. it’s much better than anything lonely planet could ever tell you.
