Things to do in Kihei, Hawaii?

Julia K asked:

I’m staying at the Royal Mauian Resort in March. Are there any fun things to do that are by the resort, or are just close to one of the three Kamaole beaches? I’m thinking about taking surfing lessons especially. Thanks.

    1) Pukalani Golf Course
Best golf bargain on Maui. Magnificent views from 1100 feet up Haleakala. Conditioning is average, layout is good. $45 weekdays with the $5 off coupon from the Maui Golf Review magazine.

    2) Drop by Henry’s Bar in Kihei, Maui
Drop by Henry’s Bar in Kihei. Nice little bar located in a small shopping mall on the corner of S. Kihei Road and Lipoa Street.

    3) Makena
If you’re in Kihei, drive south, past all the tacky tourist congestion, and see Makena and beyond. The road gets rough after a while but go as far as you feel comfortable. It’s real pretty down there.

    4) Down the road past Wailea is “Little Beach”
Directions: At the end of the paved road just past the point on the map. Big Beach and Little Beach. Little Beach is clothing optional and is further out on the point. The beaches in Kihei are great. The water is relatively calm, and it hardly ever rains.

    5) Maui Aquarium
Walk through tunnel where the fish swim all around you. Sharks, rays, turtles, great for kids. Be sure to go on a weekday when the local kids are in school so it isn’t as crowded. (Very cool)

    6) Maui Espresso Shave Ice
The best shave ice on Maui. Ice is like snow and melts in your mouth. Nothing beats shave ice on a hot day in Kihei.

    7) Helicopter Ride Over Maui
This activity although quite pricey is an awesome thing to do and a great way to see Maui. We flew with a pilot called Captain Kirk on Air Maui. He was really informative and made my fear of flying non-existant. Everyone should try this at least once in their life.
    8) Snorkeling to see beautiful fish
You will enjoy seeing the exotic Hawaiian fish and the beautiful Sea Turtles. The ocean in Hawaii is quite warm.

I used to live in Hawaii & I have vacationed there 8 or 9 times since moving back to California. Have fun, I hope this helps.
