Things to do in Hawaii?

Marinewife asked:

I live on Oahu, because my husband is stationed here, i was just wondering if anyone could tell me something interesting to do that my husband and i can do. Please don’t tell me to go to the beach, i live two minutes away and i go all the time. And don’t tell me to visit honolulu, or pearl harbor, been there and done that. Please nothing illegal.

Why not hiking? If you’re not in good shape, your marine can always carry you! And it’s amazing the things you can discover on your own together when you are hiking in areas you haven’t been. Bored in Hawaii? NO reason for that.

There is so much to do. Go snorkiling. Do things out at the beach that you may never have before.
Its not even hard to just get a plane to The Big Island, and you can visit Volcano National Park, and get upclose and personal with a active volcano.
    It’s really interesting.
There is alot too do so you shouldnt be bored.

Here are the things I use to do, when my husband was stationed there too for 3 years we lived there that long & I got so bored after awhile but here’s my list:

-shopping @ Ala Moana in Waikiki, Pearlridge in Pearl City, Windward Mall in Kane’ohe, Waipahu Outlet.

    -go hiking @ Diamond Head

-Xtreme Parasailing in Waikiki, we did this on our honeymoon & it was awesome! stayed @ Hale Koa.

-try eating @ different restaurants, every other weekend we would drive up to North Shore, stop by @ Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck.

-Swap Meet @ Aloha Stadium in Aiea during the weekends.

-Germaine’s Luau, we attended this Luau twice.

-Go to the movies @ Ward Centre, go bowling, play pool, water park, Dinner Cruise in Waikiki.

Other than that, we were either shopping @ the Exchange, Commissary or over @ a friends house for a BBQ or get together. If you have enough money, you can go visit the other neighbor islands, our favorites are Kauai, Maui & The Big Island. That’s what we did :) The flights were cheap last year it was only $20 per way on Go! Airlines or Aloha Airlines but I don’t know if the price changed this year, most likely it did and Aloha Airlines is no longer operating. Check with Go! airlines.

Gee.. you live in Hawaii and you’re bored??? Dang girl, get out of the house and live a little.

Lots of stuff to do on Oahu. Shopping of course, hikes, restaurants, a stroll through Waikiki once in a while just to laugh at the tourists. Go to Pali look out and freeze your **** off on a tropical island. Take some courses at UH of UOP. Volunteer at the Queens Hospital. Take up a local kine hobby… like lei making, quilting, paddling, diving, etc. Travel to the neighbor islands.
Get out of the house and off the base. Make some local friends. You’re in one of the most beautiful places on earth, make the most of it.

Here are some great things to do that you might not have done yet:

    1. Watch the sunset from Kaena Beach State Park. This is a very non-touristy area and the sunsets can be spectacular.

    2. Manoa Falls Trail above Honolulu.

    3. Watch the sunset from Puu Ualakaa State Wayside above Honolulu.

    4. Kayak from Lanikai Beach over to Mokulua Nui island (do this when the seas are calm). You will see tons of turtles and pretty scenery.

    5. Learn about Hawaiian history at the Bishop Museum. Really, it is an amazing museum telling the history and culture of the islands. Since you are living there, you might as well learn something about it.

    6. Go to Kawaiahao Church in Honolulu to hear some Hawaiian.

    7. Eat at Little Village Noodle House in Chinatown, then explore Chinatown. Honolulu has the oldest Chinatown in the U.S.

    8. Sometime in the summer go to Koko Crater Garden near Hanauma Bay. The plumerias are beautiful there.

    9. Don’t miss Foster Garden near downtown Honolulu. It is really fascinating to see all the exotic plants and huge trees there.

    10. Go to the north shore for some shave ice. It’s totally different from a snow cone and MUCH better. Amazing! Matsumoto’s is really good.

That should get you started. There are a lot more great ideas at

    and click on Oahu.

    Have fun!

    My Recommendations:
    Hike up Diamond Head
    Visit the Honolulu Zoo
Watch the lighting of the Tiki tourches in Waikiki
Shop at the swap meet at Aloha Stadium. You will find the best prices on your Hawaiian shirt and other merchandise there.
Go to the top of Aloha Tower, shop, and dine at the Aloha Tower Marketplace.
    Visit the Polynesian Cultural Center
    Tour the Dole Pineapple Plantation
Go to Sunset On the Beach for free Hawaiian entertainment and a free movie. There are food vendors there as well.
Eat and shop at the International Market.
Visit or stay at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Believe it or not, it was the tallest building in Honolulu for many years.
Tour the island on the Bus. It’s one of the best ways to see the island.
