Ok here is what I would recommend. Since you didn’t mention a time frame I would assume you will be going for a week or so. I have 2 suggestions:
Maui: beautiful island with a lot of variation. It is probably the “island sampler”….it gives you a small idea of what each of the other islands are like. There is the west coast (Lahaina) which has Front Street. This is a great street to shop, people watch, enjoy the sunset or gaze into the ocean. Also in Lahaina is one of the best luaus. It’s called The Old Lahaina Luau. I would highly recommend it as I’ve been there twice. Another activity I would suggest is seeing the sunrise on the inactive volacano, Haleakala. It is a sight you will never forget. A beautiful way to greet the day. If time allows, take the Road To Hana. It is a scenic drive with many different places to stop. Among them are the seven sacred pools and Charles Lindbergh’s grave. When you get to Hana there is a black sand beach you shouldn’t miss seeing.
Kauai: My favorite island and what I feel is the most beautiful. A nature lover’s paradise. The Na Pali coast is breathtaking. If nothing else, a helicopter ride over it is worth the money. It shows you just how the work of man pales in comparison to the work of God. There is also Waimea Canyon which is coined as the “Grand Canyon” of the Pacific. There are many trails throughout….from light hiking to a little more moderate. Poipu Beach is nice… it’s on the west side of the island which is where the sunshines almost everyday of the year. Not much of a shopping scene on Kauai and after 7pm or so all you hear is the sound of the ocean and the palm trees swaying.
Whatever you decide to do, have fun, relax and enjoy the Aloha Spirit.
****** Just thought of something. If you are interested in getting a guidebook, try “Maui Revealed” by Andrew Doughty
It gives great information regarding everything…it even includes “off the beaten path” activities. ******

definately maui!
i took my parents there last year and it’s a truly gorgeous island with much to do and see. very different than oahu, not as crowded, the beaches are white and sandy,
you can whale watch, scuba dive, take a kayak trip, visit a historic church, browse art galleries in lahaina, go to a luau. the haleakala crater is breathtaking with views of the whole island.
truly paradise on earth!
