Ryan G asked:

stions. First of all not to worried about cost of living..Lived on south beach Miami used to living small.

I’m a bartender/waiter where is the most work in or around honolulu?

Does hawaii have a season for restaurants such as southern Cali or Florida, and if so what months is the season ?

If there is a season is it dead in the off season for restaurants?

What town’s have low crime?

Thanks everyone for any info you gave us!! anything extra you want to add feel free! :)
Are the restaurants hiring year round?
I’m used to being a minority where as Miami is like 80% cuban.I know the cost of living it’s all over craigslist. I’m mainly just intrested in front house restaurant jobs.

Waikiki & central Honolulu have the most bars & restaurants, also some in the Pearlridge area

Tourism is really off this year. Usually, even in off season, it’s not dead. This year, things are very slow.

Crime rates tend to be higher in Kalihi & on the leeward coast

Ed to add: this year I do not think you can count on hiring year round. Hotel occupancy is way down & as a result there are lay offs in the tourism industry. I think you would be very wise to secure employment before relocating your family. If that is not something you would consider doing, please bring enough money that you are able to get home if you are unable to find work. It’s bad this year.

get ready for the ****** attitudes of calling you a “haole” for being nonlocal. jobs are super tough to find. good luck. pick a good part of the island to live. its going to cost more than SOBE.

The most work for bartender/waitress/waiter would be on Oahu in the Waikiki area. Make sure you come with money…any job in the Food and Beverage industry is really hard to find at the moment. Lots and lots of bartenders and waitresses/waiters have been laid off and are now on unemployment. Don’t worry about “Bitter Old Ba” comment about racism. Hawaii is the least “racist” place you will ever find. For some reason he is fanatical about haoles, but he is the vast minority.
And from his answers, he does not even live here (thank goodness).
Good luck in your move and welcome to Hawaii.

The high seasons are Dec-March or so, and then July-September, but tourism is down about 20% this year. As an experienced bartender, you might get a job in Waikiki as noted but not in most other areas except the Ko Olina area in West Oahu. April-May is usually dead, and also October. Low crime is most of Eastern Oahu along the south shore, which is also the higher cost of living areas. Makiki has lots of apartments, and has a bus line to Waikiki. Be sure if you come to bring several thousand dollars at minimum to tide you over.
