Don’t bring a beach chair, buy a cheap one, if you need to. Tennis shoes for sure, especially if you go walking, shopping, etc. There are a lot of beautiful places to hike. A sweatshirt, yes. It does rain, and depending on what time of day it is and where exactly you are going, it’ll come in handy.

I hardly wear sleeves anymore. If you’re planning on going up Haleakala or Mauna Kea, you’ll want to bring some warm layers. Even Nuuanu Pali on Oahu can be chilly in a brisk wind. Some of the buildings–especially movie theatres–and buses crank up the AC, too!

Tennis shoes are good for hiking, but you could probably get away with rubbah slippahs (flip-flops) most of the time like the locals wear.

Curiously, locals do not normally bring beach towels to the beach. You bring tatami (grass mats), and rayon pareaus (sarongs), maybe some batik ones made in Indonesia. You swim first, then you towel off with the pareau, lie on the tatami in the sun until your swimsuit is dry, and go home. Your pareau is probably dry by then too, only easy! Tatami and pareaus can be bought fairly cheaply at Long’s Drugs, ABC Stores, and plenty other places.

You don’t need to bring that much stuff, really. We do have stores, but some things are more expensive. The bulkier groceries like chips and cereal are pretty expensive, but who wants to fill their luggage up with that stuff? What can be really handy is a soft brush for getting the sand off your feet when you leave the beach. But that’s what the outdoor showers are for, too!

How long are you staying? July is hot for Hawaii (in the 90′s) but cool at night (70′s). It’s the tropics so it may rain (but remain cool, as opposed to cold). Here’s what you bring: 4 board shorts, 4 t-shirts (or thin tops), underwear, a light jacket or sweater for nite time, flip/flops (or buy them here), 1 pair shoes for running/walking/hiking. 2 or 3 outfits for going out at night (bring a nice pair of shoes). Yes, we do dress-up to go out. I find that hospital scrub pants are excellent for hiking in Hawaii (most Hawaii trails will eat up your calves/thighs) Leave at home: heavy sweaters, thick leather jackets, your tie, your UGG’s, don’t bring slacks. A nice pair or 2 of ‘all-purpose’ jeans will do. Buy all you toiletries here, or bring small amounts with you. Essentially, bring what amounts to 1 load of laundry or what fits in your carry-on. You’re on vacation, relax, don’t over do-it. If you find you need something, buy it.

I think the answers you already have pretty well cover it. But Beckee’s comment about a soft brush to remove sand made me remember a tip I learned when my kids were little. Dust the feet with some baby powder & the sand brushes right off. I keep a small container in the glove box. Works like a charm.

You wont need a sweatshirt in July even if it does rain it will fell good. What island you going to? Maybe if you plan on going out bring a couple shirts and some $$$.
