If You Went to Maui,Hawaii?

atlantagal asked:

If you went to Maui, Hawaii for a week, and had a limited budget and were pretty much on your own, and didn’t like the beach (I burn easily)….what would you do and why? I’m 31 so I can pretty much get into anywhere. Thanks!!
I’m going because my parents got a free hotel room from some friends of theirs and invited my sister and I along and paid for our plane tickets….who could say no? =)
Please read my question…I don’t like the beach because I burn….thanks
I looked at helicopter rides and they are way out of my budget…they start at $135.00 for 30 minutes…ouch!

When you get there, get a bunch of pamphlets for visitors, there is always a lot of stuff in there. When I went to Maui a few years ago, we spent a few days camping, hiking, wore lots of sunscreen, snorkeling. We had a blast!!

Well, if your budget can afford it, take a helicopter ride… see the beaches and ask the locals where the best restaurants are. Take a hike and see a waterfall! Try and see some hula or tahitian dances, and maybe go on a boat ride. They sell guides to each island, so you can always find something to do!

You can go to Walmart or Costco and oh my Gosh they even have a Lowe’s there.

Check out the flora & fauna.

Everyone I know burns without sunblock.

Get a heavy supply of sun block. Hawaii is all about the water(beaches), flora and fauna. It is an amazingly beautiful place.

It is very nice in Hawaii. I can’t imagine anyone not wanting to get out there and even to the beaches. Rent a bike and ride around and take in the beauty.

    Maui.

If you said “The Big Island”, there would be crateloads of fun stuff to do and not have to just sit on the beach.

Still, the history is just as rich and you could do something

I went a few years ago and did plenty! Horseback riding at Iron mountain ranch, took a snorkling trip-or you could do a whale watching trip. There’s plenty of trails to hike or you could rent a car and drive all over the island- go to Lahaina or Hana and drive that scary road! Old town Lahaina has some really neat shopping and places to eat and it’s not that expensive. You know, I really didn’t notice that many nightspots where we were staying-it kind of seemed the island shut down at sunset and awoke with daybreak.

There’s an aquarium at Maalea Bay (between Ka’anapali & Kihei). Pacific Whale Foundation also located at the same location (as well as other companies on the island) offer snorkeling/boat tours. The last time we went, we saw bottlenose and spinner dolphins swimming along side our boat! In Lahaina, we took a cool submarine ride and saw lots of fish. During whale season, you might see whales as our friends did when they did this tour. I’ao Valley in Wailuku is a beautiful spot to explore.

The Shops in Wailea is a nice place to window shop and browse — it’s an outdoor mall. If you want an indoor mall, there’s one on the way out to Wailuku (I think). Another thing you can do is check out some of the luxury resorts on the island — many beautiful properties set along the ocean surrounded with immaculate landscaping, fountains, etc. I recommend checking out The Grand Wailea and Kea Lani Resorts in Wailea. You’ll also find the Four Seasons there as well as a few others.

Take a driving trip to Hana and explore all the detours off the main road that will lead to waterfalls, hikes, and even a banana bread stand (read the part about Hana in “Maui Revealed”).

Sample cuisine at Roy’s (Kihei), Sansei (Kihei & Kapalua), local plate lunches at Da Kitchen (Kihei) or Aloha Mixed Plate (near Lahaina), Eskimo’s Candy (fish platters/Kihei), Maui Tacos (Kihei as well as other parts of the island). Get ice cream at Lapperts (they have unique flavors which include “island ingredients” such as macadamia nuts, kona coffee, coconut, etc.) — several locations serve Lapperts including stores in Kihei, Wailea, and Lahaina to name a few.

One of the neat things to do is to connect with a Haleakala bicycle down hill trip. For a fee, they take you up to the top of the volcano, provide you a bike with beefed up brakes, a helmet, and gear. Then you ride/coast down hill escorted, until you reach the ocean. Beautiful, exhilarating, and fun.

dont know wat u saying but i been there (go to hawaii mostly every summer)

Drive the Road to Hana. It’s free, but the views are priceless. Go to the Haleakala Crater, it’s also free. Nature is free and you won’t burn in a car.

Have you looked into the UV clothing? Not too stylish for the beach, but would definitely open some options for snorkeling, catamaran tours, etc. They have lots of UV clothing and/or the shirts that surfers wear that I can’t think of the name of…. I would find some way to get in the water.

Otherwise, as others said, Haleakala Crater is beautiful (but also will be in the sun). Hana is beautiful and tends to have more rain, but it is a drive from where most people stay. Good luck.

You should rent a car and do the road to Hana..there are many tourist attractions waterfalls and other scenic nature stuff. It takes a good 7-8 hours to do the whole thing and stop to take pictures etc..

Also, the sunrise or sunset on Haleakala is suppose to be phenomenal. You can rent a bike to ride down the mountain. The shopping is really good in Wailea (all upscale shops at one shopping center like Prada, Coach, Ralph Lauren). Just walking around the high dollar hotels is neat and the sunsets.

We did an evening boat dinner thing that was cheap and fun. Also, a day of snorkeling with big turtles, fish and dolphins.

I’m actually on Maui right now, on my honeymoon. So far my favorite thing (besides playing in the waves) has been the swap meet, it’s every saturday morning 7am to noon in Kahului if you can’t find it ask a local, they will know what you’re talking about.

We drove the road to hana (not with a tour group) it made me carsick but it was really pretty hehe, I wont go again though. EVERYTHING to do is pretty pricey, you can sit through a “timeshare” presentation and get discounts, but my husband and I are students and dont qualify for their program so I don’t even know if they’re scams or not. We’re doing the old lahina luau in a few days, but it is pretty expensive. we are planning on going on a snorkle trip too. We both just picked 1 thing we wanted to do so that it is affordable.

I burn pretty easy, and tend to get sick from a full day in the sun, but the weather here is very nice, the only time it is uncomfortable is when you’re directly in the sun. I would recommend going to the beach with a big umbrella to sit under, even though you don’t like the beach I have a feeling you’d like to sit and relax and at least look at the ocean in the shade. We went to Kaanapali beach, by the resorts, and there were lots of people playing in the water, the waves were pretty big and I sat under my umbrella watching people, it was really entertaining! People boogie board, surf and some just fall down in waves a lot!

Don’t forget your sunscreen though, even when you don’t think you’ll need it. I didnt think about it on the road to hana, ended up burning my shoulders and nose….bleh.
