How will i survive in Hawaii?

Kevin the Great asked:

I’m turning 18 in september, I plan on moving to hawaii and starting a new life. Attending a trade school for computers. Is it possible for me to get a part time job, pay rent, and have money for fun stuff to do in Hawaii? Is it easy to just find a room and meet cool people. I just wanna spend my days on the beach enjoying life. Even if im a bum on the sand i’ll be happy. I’m sick of california. I got to leave. So anyways will i be able to survive. I want to move to a spot where it’s sorta suburban, not to fancy. and not too ghetto

be prepared Hawaii is freakin expenisve! I suggest finding a room mate or a really high paying job. I hope everything works out, you’re gonna have fun either way! I’d rather be homeless on the beach then icky California!

Hawaii and the coast of California are the “Rivera” of America. Expensive. Keep dreaming; dreams are very important.

When you say “Hawaii”, do you mean the big Island?, Oahu (where honolulu and waikiki is), Maui, or Kauai?

Answer that question first and you will be able to plan better. Oahu, will probably be the biggest challenge because its more populated than the other islands making it much more competitive and (to some extent) expensive than the rest due to the high demands of tourism in that island.

I want to move to Oahu, but I have to plan carefully before I do so – otherwise, I may end up back home in no time!
I suggest you look through some of the questions asked about moving to hawaii and you’ll find some really good answer to your question.
    Good luck!

You will definately need a roomate in order to make ends meet. Will you need to make enough to cover all of your living expenses, or will you be getting help from the parentals? How many hours do you envision working part time? Lots of unknowns, so it is hard to predict how realistic your plan is.

Check craigslist.com for rooms or houses to share in Hawaii. You will need a job as everything is expensive here, but you can do it. Oahu has pretty good public transportation — much better than the outer islands (Maui, Kauai, Big Island, etc.), so you might be able to get by without a car if you live there. Oahu and Maui have the most nightlife so they might be more interesting for someone young like yourself. I think you might find the Big Island and Kauai too “sleepy” although the islands are very beautiful. Try to line up a job ahead of time so that you’re set when you get here. You will need a pretty big nest egg to live on if you’re moving over here without a job. Good luck!
