How much money do you need to earn/have to live and have a decent life in Hawaii? Houses?
ND=NC asked:
Well, one of my life plans is to be an officer in the Navy or CG for 20+ years. If I’m married and have kids I’ll probably get out at a little over 20, just to put down some roots. I was born in Hawaii and I’d love to go back there, but it’s so expensive. I was thinking after I get out of the service I’d maybe join the Honolulu police, but I may be too old, I’d be at least 42-43. I also might get my doctorate and try and get a job (preferably admin) with UH or Chaminade. But this is just a dream, who knows what will actually happen.
I’ll probably have to live in a condo, I’m not really an extravagant spender and I was just wondering at what salary you need to have a decent life? I’m not planning to live in a mansion, but I don’t want to live on the beach in a tent or in a shanty.

Ohh and if I’m retired military, being near Pearl, Hickam or Keneohe(sp?) would be nice, but not necessary.
Also, while I’m active duty and stationed in Hawaii for 3-4 years, should I scout for a fixer upper, or something to invest in. And I’m going to assume Oahu has the cheapest everything of all of the islands?
Than- I mean Mahalo. ![]()
Ohh and while I’m talking about jobs does anyone know if there are good jobs that a retired military officer could slide into? I’m thinking 43 would be too old to become a Honolulu cop.

Since you’re planning on being in the military you won’t have to worry as much as civilians would. Your BAH should cover at least most of your mortgage. However, whatever you can afford probably won’t be something you’d want to retire in after 20 some odd years. But than again you can always find a decent size condo in Ko Olina. Now that of course would take some out of pocket expenses but I can guarantee you won’t have any issues with renting that out once you left the island. I think if you are stationed here scoping out the scene would be a very prudent thing to do. Keep in mind that if you do invest in real estate down here and move a few years later you will more than likely have some headaches. A property manager is going to cost money and you may get overcharged on certain items being an absentee landlord and all. Don’t rush into anything. You may not want to stay in hawaii after 20 years and travelling around the world.
