The only choice if you want to see nightlife and go shopping is Oahu. All of the other islands are very “country” and the major city in Hawaii, Honolulu, is part of Oahu. You can stay in Honolulu and Waikiki, where some of the best shopping in the world is. You can go to high fashion designer boutiques, or the International Marketplace where you can find great deals on Hawaiian item and souvenirs. There is always something going on in Waikiki, check local newspaper listings for evening events. Here is a link:
But make sure to spend time on the Northshore of Oahu as well. This is where all the most famous surf competitions in the world are held, and the country side is breathtaking. The Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie has a great night show with dancers from all over the world, and it is a little over an hour drive from Honolulu. Here is a link:
The beaches on the Northshore are so much better than the beaches in Waikiki…no crowds, much more beautiful and natural, in the winter there are huge waves, in the summer most of the beaches are calm as a lake. I recommend sunset beach for the sunset, and Waimea Bay for swimming (only in the summer though). At Waimea there is a 30 ft rock you can jump from into the ocean.
In general, I would say the best nightlife and shopping are in Honolulu and Waikiki, and the best beaches are on the Northshore. There is also some interesting shopping on the Northshore in the biggest surf town, Haleiwa, and I would say it is definitely worth a stop there. Have fun and congrats! Aloha.

Go to Oahu. If you have the money and the time, the next island is Maui, which is more natural, and your accomodations will be nicer. I loved both islands, and will defintely do both when I go back.

Oahu. My husband and I honeymooned there in September, it was a fabulous trip. We were able to have so much fun (night life, shopping, dinner etc) and also rent a car and get head up to the north shore for a different scene. Oahu has so much to offer, but its a MUST to get out of honolulu and really see the island.
