If you have a local dollar-store, start there! I found some great leis and other things at one here and the price is of course great!
Palm trees are not too hard to make with some green posterboard to cut the fronds out of. You can make the trunks out of brown posterboard, cut in wide strips and made into rings, so that each is a tad smaller than the first, glued or taped on the inside, so they overlap one another and become smaller at the top.
Brightly colored tissue paper can make great tropical flowers.
Grass skirts can be made of all sorts of materials, natural or not. It’s the idea that counts, so even if you make them out of strips of fabric, they will get the mood across.
Straw mats to sit on, or put food on… anything earthy and tropical looking.
Use your imagination; get creative. Think about Gilligan’s Island. LOL
I hope more people will give you more ideas.
Have fun, Lili
